Did you earn your drink?
I remember the first time I was rewarded for scoring 90% on my annual mathematics test at school. A friend walked past and asked me: “Did Helen give you this drink?”
At that time, I felt hurt by comments like this. To me, the question implied: “You didn’t really earn it, someone must have given it to you.”
As adults, the same thing can happen in different ways. A simple question doesn’t always mean more than it seems, but sometimes it does. Often, it reflects the limits we feel within ourselves, limits we then project onto others. If we don’t believe something is possible for us, we might assume it isn’t possible for someone else either.
Yet the ability to celebrate another person’s success is a beautiful quality. It shows we have a growth mindset: seeing life as a journey of learning and growing, trusting that others will keep improving, and knowing we can too.
