Why Do I Feel Off? The Hidden Cycles Affecting Your Mood


For a long time, I noticed a pattern in my mood and energy levels. There were times when I felt particularly irritable, down, or fatigued without any clear reason. It was not until I started paying closer attention to my body that I realized these fluctuations were part of a natural cycle.

Our bodies go through various natural life cycles, each influencing our emotions, energy, and overall well-being. These include puberty, hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy and postpartum, menopause, circadian rhythms, male hormonal changes (andropause), and the natural process of aging. While these changes are an unavoidable part of life, they can sometimes leave us feeling out of sync.

These shifts are closely tied to inevitable chemical changes in the body. When hormone levels fluctuate, brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol also change, affecting mood, motivation, and stress levels. Recognizing this connection helps us understand that our emotions are not just reactions to external circumstances but also responses to internal biological processes.

Since becoming aware of this pattern, I have learned to approach these shifts with more self-compassion. When I feel off, I take small actions that help, whether it is prioritizing rest, spending time outdoors, or reminding myself that this phase will pass.

We cannot stop these natural cycles or the chemical changes they bring, but how we respond to them matters. When we take care of ourselves, we also reduce the impact these shifts have on the people around us. By understanding our bodies and making intentional choices, we create a more balanced and supportive environment for ourselves and others.
