Why representation in media shapes how we see ourselves

Why representation in media shapes how we see ourselves

While watching The Bank of Dave 2, I was pleased to see women of different body shapes featured as main characters. I am truly grateful to the filmmakers for making that choice.

In every industry, when we are given the honor of sharing our work with the public, we also have the opportunity and responsibility to promote equality and share values that support mental wellbeing. According to research, 59 percent of people say that diet and fitness content on social media has negatively affected their body image. This is a powerful reminder of how media influences the way people see themselves.

We grow up watching movies and flipping through magazines, and over time, we start to believe that is how we are meant to look. These images quietly shape our expectations, not just of beauty but of worth, success, and belonging. When we do not see ourselves reflected in those images, or when we do not fit that narrow standard, we begin to feel like we are the ones who are wrong. Like our bodies need fixing. Like we are not enough. But the truth is, there is nothing wrong with our bodies. What is often wrong is the lens we have been shown, a filtered and limited version of beauty that leaves too many people feeling unseen.

Representation matters. Not just for the sake of variety, but because it helps us rewrite what we believe is normal, acceptable, and beautiful. That is why I was so moved to see that the Bank of Dave 2 includes women of different body shapes in lead roles. It may seem like a small detail, but it plants a powerful seed, one that can quietly remind viewers that they are already enough.

Just a gentle reminder: as long as our body shape doesn’t affect our health, there is nothing that needs fixing.

Feel free to share with anyone who needs this reminder.
