Your appearance will never stand in the way of achieving what you truly want in life unless you let it.
If you dream of reaching a goal but believe you need to meet certain appearance standards first, here is the truth. You will not get there until your mind is ready. It is not about how you look. It is about how you think. The rejections you face are not entirely about your appearance. They happen because society’s standards have tricked you into believing you are not enough. When you buy into that lie, you reject yourself long before the world even has a chance to.
Here is the reality. Even when it feels like the whole world is against you, there are always people willing to open a door for you. But if you do not believe in yourself, you will not even see the door, let alone walk through it. It does not matter whether you want to break into an industry with impossible beauty standards or find the right partner who values you. What matters most is how you see yourself and your potential. When you fully embrace who you are, the world cannot help but take notice.
You might think I am being unrealistic, so let me share a story that shaped my life.
Growing up in Taiwan, I was labelled ugly. The judgment of others followed me like a shadow, reminding me constantly that I did not fit the beauty standards. But despite the noise, I entered a modeling competition hosted by one of Taiwan’s top agencies. Out of roughly one thousand contestants from around the world, I rose to the top fifty. It was not because I suddenly became beautiful by society’s standards. It was because I stopped letting those standards define me. Still, my story is only one example. Time and again, people prove that your appearance or any other external factor does not dictate your potential.
The only thing standing between you and your dreams is the power you give to the world’s standards to hold you back. Some people say there are minimum requirements. Really? Then look at Muggsy. The average NBA player is two hundred centimetres tall. Think about how many basketball players dream of making it to the NBA. Now think about how many are taller than one hundred and sixty centimetres. Yet Muggsy broke every expectation and let his skills speak louder than his size. His story is legendary because he refused to let limits define him.
Here is what you need to remember. You do not need to achieve a perfect appearance before you can achieve what you truly want. What you need is the courage to shift your mindset. If people doubt you, let it fuel you, not stop you. And whatever you do, never reject yourself. Even when the world feels like it has shut its doors, there is always someone ready to open one for you. You simply need to believe in yourself long enough to find it, step through it, and show both the world and yourself what you are truly capable of.
