A Different Angle

A Different Angle

Telling a story provides me with the opportunity to explore a perspective with compassion. The human brain receives millions of bits of information per second, yet we can only consciously process about 126 bits per second, as estimated by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Clearly, we never see the full picture behind a person’s story.

To make sense of the world, we delete, distort, and generalize information, filtering reality in ways that allow us to function. But this same process can also lead us to make quick judgments. That is why I love what Frank Caprio once said:

"You never know the battle someone is fighting. Compassion can be the light they need in their darkest moment."

Compassion offers a different angle, one that invites us to see beyond the surface, to listen without assumptions, and to understand without needing to be right. It is the willingness to slow down, step outside of our habitual way of seeing the world, and bring love and kindness into our perspective.

When we choose compassion, we no longer just hear a story. We feel it. We connect not just with the words, but with the human experience behind them. We realize that everyone is carrying something unseen.

And in that moment, we do not just change how we see others. We change how we show up in the world.

Feel free to share this message and bring more compassion into the world.
