Just be kind with the immigrants. Recent days, I was involved in a conversation with my Australian friends. What I have found, some people use the name of caring to make severe judgements towards another immigrant. The reason for the judgement is because the immigrant couldn’t speak good English and become involved in your friend’s zone.
The thing I couldn’t understand, why is she so unkind? One side she said how worried she is towards the immigrant’s situation. The other side, she used the name of caring to make several judgements towards another immigrant.
From my perspective of an outsider, I think it is not reasonable to make such judgements. If we really wish someone has a good life, we wouldn’t use this approach to describe them, the judgement will only tear people’s family apart. So it is totally against the name of caring.
Now I am fortunate to be able to have great conversations with my Australian friends after many years of practice and frustration of learning a new language. I couldn’t endure when people present their racism towards other immigrants.
I am not saying we have to treat anyone special, but at least treat them like human. Just because they couldn’t express themselves well, we think we can say whatever we want to destroy them.
Try to imagine, if we ever try to stay in a country for a very long time and speaking another language, adapt to another culture, change your entire appetite to eat total different food and live the way we live, we may not make the judgement as easy.
So, if we haven’t done it, just be kind.
One thing I also discovered after many years of interacting with people from all backgrounds. The people who have actually lived overseas for a long time and speaking another language. They presented more understanding and consideration to immigrants or people with all background, as they have broader perspective of the world.
