Becoming Isn’t Instant

Becoming Isn’t Instant

We all have certain role models who serve as guides, helping us become the person we aspire to be.

Often, we recognize areas where we can improve, which is why we admire specific traits in others. However, acquiring these traits is not a simple process. It requires growth, self-awareness, and at times, overcoming internal struggles.

Take generosity for example. If someone grew up in an underprivileged family, being generous is not just about donating money to those in need. Before taking action, they might face deep emotional struggles, torn between past hardships and their present reality. Even when financial insecurity is no longer a threat, the fear of poverty may linger and influence their decisions in ways they do not always realize. The act of giving then becomes more than a transaction. It is a process of breaking free from past survival instincts.

The same applies to kindness, patience, confidence, or any other trait we seek to cultivate. Becoming the person we want to be is not about flipping a switch. It is about allowing ourselves time and space to grow. Every small step matters, especially when we are caught in the tension between who we were and who we are becoming.

Just as we need time and patience to grow, so do others. But it is important to remember that who someone wants to become is their own choice. Growth cannot be forced upon anyone, and real change only happens when a person is willing to embrace it. Instead of expecting people to change on our terms, we can offer support and encouragement while respecting their journey. Everyone evolves in their own time, and sometimes, that means accepting people as they are.

Becoming isn’t instant, but with patience and self-compassion, we move closer to embodying the qualities we admire. Not just as ideals, but as authentic parts of ourselves. And in doing so, we also allow others the space to grow or stay as they are on their own terms.
