I got my braces on 4 days ago. Some of you might be wondering why, especially when my book is called From Ugly to Beautiful Without Surgery. Does wearing braces mean I am trying to look perfect?
The truth is, I did not always accept my teeth. But through doing my inner work, I have learned to accept myself as I am. I do not believe my so-called imperfect teeth make me any less beautiful. I am proud of who I am today, and I hope you feel proud of who you are too.
In the past few years I have had one dental problem after another. Broken teeth, countless root canals and pain that I could not ignore. Part of this was because my teeth were naturally misaligned, and part of it was because I used to eat a lot of sugary food and did not take care of them properly. One dentist explained that the misalignment caused uneven pressure, which made these problems worse.
A few months ago I even had to have a molar removed, which left a big gap. At that point I had to choose whether to get an implant and keep my teeth misaligned, meaning the pressure problem would still be there, or wear braces to fix the real cause. I chose to take care of the root issue, not just cover it up.
For me, self acceptance means embracing what we are born with. But when something affects our health, it is worth looking after it. Not to chase perfection, but because we all deserve to be healthy and well.
