I once read a book by a Taiwanese author who shared something interesting from her time living in the Netherlands. She noticed that conversations between Dutch people often sounded like arguments. But they weren’t fighting, they were simply engaging in open, honest discussion. In Dutch culture, being direct and voicing disagreement is seen as a sign of respect and engagement, not conflict.
Welcoming different opinions around the same table has become one of the most beautiful things I’ve come to appreciate. It opens the door to fresh ideas, broadens my perspective, and helps me see beyond what I already know.
Holding space for differing views doesn’t mean we have to abandon our own. It isn’t a threat, nor is it a conversation we need to “win.” It’s an opportunity to grow, to explore new ideas, and to open doors we might never have noticed on our own.
Feel free to share this message with someone who needs a reminder that open communication can be a gift.
