Today marks the last day of January, and I want to take a moment to thank you, my beautiful readers, for showing up and supporting me. I have loved seeing you engage with my posts every morning, and I deeply appreciate each one of you.
As I write this, I cannot help but reflect on how often we tend to reserve celebrations for the big moments, those significant milestones that take time and effort to achieve. But what about the smaller victories along the way? They are just as important, if not more, because they keep us motivated and give us the recognition we all need.
Don't wait for the ceremony, celebrate now. Recognition is not just a nice bonus; it is actually a psychological and fundamental need, according to Self Determination Theory (SDT) by Deci and Ryan. This theory explains that humans thrive when three core needs are met:
1. Autonomy: The feeling that we have control over our choices and actions.
2. Competence: The sense that we are capable and making meaningful progress.
3. Relatedness: Feeling connected to and valued by others.
When we celebrate small wins, we fulfill these needs in powerful ways. Acknowledging our progress reinforces competence by showing us we are capable of achieving our goals. Sharing these wins with others fosters relatedness, strengthening our sense of connection and support. Together, these build intrinsic motivation, making us more likely to continue working toward our long term goals.
For example, writing a post every single day has been a challenge for me, a small win on my journey toward a larger goal. Knowing that you are here, reading and supporting me, gives me the energy to keep going. You are a part of what fuels me, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
So, what is your big goal? And more importantly, have you celebrated your small wins along the way? Could you set a day to acknowledge and celebrate your progress? Maybe you can celebrate by buying yourself a little gift, going out with friends or family to a restaurant you like, or treating yourself in a way that feels meaningful. It does not have to be grand, just a moment to remind yourself how far you have come.
