Facing the Inevitable

Facing the Inevitable

Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks provided a thought-provoking statement exercise for individuals to repeat daily: "The board is talking about my replacement." I love this simple exercise he shared for people navigating their careers, especially those facing challenges with declining abilities due to aging. This daily practice helps successful individuals accept the truth that one day, they may no longer perform at their peak, eventually stepping away from their roles, and it teaches them how to feel comfortable with that reality.

This exercise has shown me how a simple statement, repeated regularly, can help normalize even the hardest truths. By practicing it daily, we train our minds to accept the inevitable, building the neurological and emotional preparedness so that when the time comes, it is no longer a surprise.

Since moving to a place with a larger elderly population, I have been learning some of life’s most difficult truths. Life is a natural cycle, it will end one day, and anything can happen to anyone at any age. These realizations have deepened my appreciation for the time I have with the people I care about. They have also reinforced the importance of preparing for life’s unpredictability while cherishing every moment.

Facing the inevitable is not about fear; it is about embracing life’s truths with strength and gratitude. As I reflect on this, I see how acknowledging life’s impermanence can be a gift. It reminds us to prioritize what truly matters, to cherish every moment, and to live with purpose. In practicing the stance, "One day, my journey will come to an end, as will the journeys of those I hold dear.” I find not fear, but a deep sense of gratitude for the time I have now and the opportunity to make it meaningful.
