Watching the news makes me anxious. I have noticed that after watching the news while living in Taiwan, I often experienced unwanted emotions, sometimes frustration, sometimes fear. And it was not just a one-time thing, it happened repeatedly. Eventually, I decided to stop watching mainstream news altogether, except for one political show hosted by a woman who presented information from a neutral perspective. More importantly, she inspired me to explore the world beyond what was being reported.
Now, living in Australia, I have noticed a similar pattern. Many people watch the news regularly, and for some, it can bring out strong emotions like frustration or worry. It seems that staying informed can sometimes come with an emotional cost, yet the habit of following current events remains important to many.
In Taiwan, the news often focused on the negative aspects of society, which contributed to my feelings of unease. However, completely disconnecting from current events was not an option for me. I still wanted to stay informed. That is why I made a conscious choice to follow channels that provide a more balanced and neutral perspective. This way, I can remain connected to the world without being overwhelmed by negativity.
Over time, I have learned that how we consume news is just as important as the news itself. Instead of letting it dictate my emotions, I try to approach it with awareness, acknowledging the information without absorbing the stress. The world is complex, and while it is valuable to stay informed, it is equally important to cultivate inner peace. By choosing where and how I engage with the news, I can stay aware of what is happening without losing sight of the good in the world.
