There are people in this world who won’t offer you kindness. This is normal because, as humans, we’re often focused on survival, or sometimes, on the need to win. But even in the absence of kindness, we have the power to choose how we respond. Choosing love over resentment can transform not just our relationships, but our entire outlook on life.
The desire to win can be overwhelming for some because being put down in the past might have made them feel worthless. For such individuals, proving their worth often becomes tied to getting back at others. Yet, when we meet such behavior with understanding instead of anger, we create a ripple of compassion that can break the cycle of pain.
Before I turned 18, when someone offended me, I used to think to myself: One day, when I achieve a certain goal or acquire something significant, I’ll get back at you. I held onto grudges, and they made me miserable. When I finally achieved the things I thought would allow me to “show off,” I realized how unimportant it was to impress people I wasn’t particularly close to, or even wanted to be close to. Instead, I discovered that love and kindness held far greater value than any material success.
I came to the realization that trying to impress people who don’t genuinely care about us is a waste of our precious time. Pursuing things solely to gain others’ approval can lead us away from what truly aligns with our personal values and authentic selves. But when we live with love in our hearts, we create a life filled with meaning, connection, and joy.
Instead, I learned to forgive. I chose to focus on loving and cherishing the people who genuinely care about me, and who I care about in return. Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing harm, but it frees us from the burden of resentment. Letting go of grudges has brought me peace and clarity, enabling me to prioritize what truly matters in life. It has also deepened my relationships, as love and kindness have the power to heal even the deepest wounds.
In a world where not everyone will show kindness, let’s be the ones who do. When we lead with love, we inspire others to do the same, creating a brighter and more compassionate world for everyone.
