Loving The Unlovable

Loving The Unlovable

When we come across someone we dislike, we often feel we have only a few options: cut them off completely, avoid any interaction, hold onto resentment, or even find ways to justify our hatred.

But there is another path. One that is far more difficult yet deeply freeing. We can choose to love them.

It might sound unreasonable. How can you dislike someone and still choose to love them? Are we going mad for even trying? Not at all. Choosing love does not mean ignoring the pain or pretending nothing happened. It means refusing to let bitterness take root in your heart. It is not just an act of kindness. It is an act of self-care.

We all know the tight ache that comes with disliking someone. That sinking feeling when we see them, or the mental spiral we fall into afterward. Avoidance feels safer. But as the saying goes, “What we resist, persists.” The discomfort stays as long as we keep pushing it away.

Wouldn’t it be lighter, even wiser, to choose love, especially when we have to see that person regularly because of work or life circumstances? Love softens our inner world. It changes the lens we look through, and suddenly, life feels a little more vibrant, a little less heavy.

And most importantly, love can change people in ways that hate never could.

Let us also acknowledge how hard it is. Loving someone we dislike takes strength, patience, and willingness to see beyond our initial judgment. It is not about ignoring their flaws, but about expanding our vision enough to recognize their humanity too.

If this speaks to you, feel free to share it with someone who may need a little reminder today.
