Starting a business is never easy. In the early stages, many business owners focus on expanding their network, hoping to create new opportunities.
But speaking to strangers can be intimidating. I still remember the first time I attended a business event. I felt completely out of place. At the time, I hadn't yet received my Australian citizenship, and I was the only Eastern face in the room. That feeling of not fitting in weighed heavily on me.
Networking events require us to represent our brand, promote ourselves, and show up with the energy needed to attract the right clients. We walk into a room filled with people we have never met, including speakers and even the mayor. It can feel overwhelming.
The truth is most people in that room feel just as nervous as we do. I have learned this by talking to experienced business professionals in their 40s and 50s. They still carry the fear of not being liked or accepted by strangers. And you know what? That is completely normal.
Now, whenever I attend a networking event, I make a habit of thanking the first person I talk to. They become the entree that helps me warm up and find my rhythm. And almost always, they thank me back because in that moment, we both feel more at ease, like we have each other’s backs.
So, if networking feels scary, remember you are not alone. Take a deep breath, start with one conversation, and let yourself grow from there. With every event, every handshake, and every shared story, you will gain confidence. Before you know it, what once felt daunting will become second nature.
All it takes is the courage to start.
