A few weeks ago, I attended a business seminar where the speaker, Michael, explored the concept of resilience. I loved his speech. He shared a simple yet powerful analogy that resonated deeply with me.
He compared a tennis ball and an egg. When dropped, a tennis ball bounces back while an egg shatters. His point was clear. Resilience is often seen as the ability to recover from setbacks just like the tennis ball.
Michael's words stayed with me, thanks to his beautiful speech, they inspired me to think from another perspective.
Many people misunderstand resilience as unwavering strength, believing we should face every situation with a tough-as-nails mindset. This perspective can make us feel like we are only allowed to show strength while suppressing all other emotions.
If we deny ourselves the full range of emotions such as grief, joy, frustration, and relief, we risk becoming pressure cookers, building up unexpressed feelings until they explode. Instead, resilience means allowing ourselves to experience and process these emotions while still finding a way forward.
The ability to bounce back is not just about being strong. It is about being flexible. Like a tree that sways in the wind rather than snapping under pressure, real resilience comes from embracing both our strength and our vulnerability.
