Psychologically speaking, when we grow up in a safe and nurturing environment that meets our emotional and physical needs, we tend to develop a stronger capacity to handle stress, both in the workplace and in other areas of life.
But if your upbringing was chaotic or emotionally unsafe, it does not mean you are broken. It simply means your nervous system may have learned to stay in survival mode. That is not a flaw. It is how your brain tried to protect you.
In these environments, the lower parts of the brain like the amygdala, which processes fear, can become overactive. This keeps the body in a constant state of alertness. As adults, we might find ourselves overreacting under pressure, struggling to concentrate, or feeling disconnected from coworkers. Sometimes it can even feel like others are walking on eggshells around us without knowing why.
The encouraging part is that our brains can change. Thanks to neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to rewire through new experiences, we can reshape how we respond to stress. Practices like deep breathing, mindfulness, gentle movement, or even hugging ourselves can help calm the nervous system and build emotional resilience.
Healing does not mean flipping a switch. It means taking small steps and being kind to ourselves along the way. Even if you grew up in an environment that made stress feel overwhelming, you can learn to respond with more calm and clarity.
It takes time, but it is absolutely possible.
