There was a time when I used to hunch over, and I felt horrified every time I looked back at old photos. My posture wasn’t just a reflection of how I carried myself- it mirrored how I felt inside.
My mum often reminded me to stand up straight, but I never listened. I didn’t fully understand how poor posture affected not only my appearance but also my health. At 175 cm tall, hunching over made me lose nearly 5 cm of height. Yet, I didn’t care because my self-esteem was at its lowest.
Growing up, I constantly felt unworthy and unattractive. With endless arguments at home and bullying at school, I couldn’t see the point of standing tall or looking my best. My world felt like it was falling apart.
For some people, hunching over can stem from deeper emotional struggles. It becomes a physical reflection of feeling small or wanting to hide. Providing a meaningful reason to change is much more effective than nagging, which rarely helps shift long-term habits.
For me, that reason came through harsh reminders from a close friend. It wasn’t always easy to hear, but because he was someone I cared about, his words carried weight. Over time, those reminders pushed me to make a change.
Now, standing tall has transformed how I see myself. Walking into a room with good posture makes me feel confident and proud. It’s amazing how such a simple shift can have such a profound impact.
Whenever I see someone hunching over, I take a different approach. I remind them how beautiful they are and encourage them to imagine a string gently pulling them upward from the top of their head. It’s a simple visualization that can make standing tall feel natural and empowering.
Research supports this too- when we change our physical posture, our mindset often follows. Standing tall can not only improve how others see us but also how we see ourselves.
