Turning Struggles into Strengths: Overcoming Depression and Finding My Calling

Turning Struggles into Strengths: Overcoming Depression and Finding My Calling

In August 2023, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. For the first time, I felt unable to cope with my personal struggles.

I travelled to Taiwan twice within a few months, taking short breaks to make sense of my chaotic mind. During this time, I met with a psychologist for the first time. I told him I didn’t like the idea of medication because it wouldn’t address the root of my problems—I had lost my sense of purpose. He agreed with me.

Medication can be crucial when needed, as depression can become severe. It can provide peace of mind during dark times. I took it once but didn’t continue because it left me unable to function clearly.

When I returned to Australia, I decided to take a proactive approach to addressing the actual issue. I realized my main problem was a lack of life purpose. I started exploring resources, investing in learning, and attending events—even when I didn’t feel like it. Things began to change the moment I focused on identifying and tackling the root cause.

I’ve always been fascinated by human behaviour and writing about self-development. This journey led me to discover my passion: coaching. The darkest moment of my life helped me find my purpose.

Coaching is a research-based, forward-focused process that helps clients set goals, create actionable plans, and unlock potential. Coaching can complement therapy and, in some cases, support individuals dealing with depression by providing structure, motivation, and a sense of purpose. Being proactive and addressing the actual issue troubling us can sometimes resolve depression faster by creating clarity and a path forward.

Therapy, on the other hand, focuses on addressing emotional challenges and mental health issues. While coaching is not a substitute for therapy, it can help clients take positive steps forward and work toward meaningful goals.

I’m sharing this to help anyone experiencing depression or similar struggles.
