When Helping Starts to Hurt

When Helping Starts to Hurt

It is natural to want to help the people we care about. Offering advice, reviewing their work, or guiding them through decisions can feel like acts of love. Especially when we have skills or experiences they trust, being their support system feels good and meaningful.

In the beginning, helping feels simple. We want to ease their stress. We want to see them succeed.
But over time, when someone becomes too reliant on our feedback or approval, a quiet discomfort may begin to surface. We might start to wonder, am I truly helping them grow, or am I slowly making them doubt themselves?

There comes a point when constant helping can unintentionally take away someone's self-trust. Without meaning to, we may weaken their confidence in making independent choices.

Realizing this is not easy. It can feel uncomfortable, even heartbreaking. And stepping back often brings guilt, as if we are abandoning them.
But true care is not about doing everything for someone. True care is about believing in their ability to figure things out, even if it means letting them stumble, learn, and find their own way.

Having honest conversations, even when they are uncomfortable, can make all the difference. When we step back with love and trust, we are not leaving them behind. We are walking beside them, allowing them to grow stronger in their own time.
