When Parents Judge, Children Break

When Parents Judge, Children Break

Our parents are meant to be the people who love and appreciate how we look and who we are the most, because in many ways we are an extension of them.

But sadly, this is not always the reality. Sometimes parents make hurtful comments about our appearance, whether small or harsh, and these words can plant seeds of self doubt that linger for years.

As a child, when the only people we trust tell us we are not good enough, we accept it as fact and carry it as our truth.

It is especially hard for children and teenagers to see the world clearly from different perspectives and make confident choices, because our brains are still developing until about the age of twenty five.

This is why awareness matters so much. Many people do not realise how deeply casual words can shape a person’s sense of worth. Often, when someone struggles with low self esteem, it shows in how they speak to others and to themselves.

It broke my heart when a woman wrote to me and shared that even her own family mocked her for being chubby, and her friends did the same. Imagine the weight of that on someone’s life. Now she needs medication just to manage her depression.

The truth is, our flaws can feel a hundred times bigger than they really are. It is like hitting an object with a hammer again and again until it is flattened. One comment is a blow. Then another, then another. Add the harsh words we repeat to ourselves, and over time we feel crushed flat, forgetting we still have so many good and beautiful parts within us.

Words can break a person in ways we may never see. So choose words that build others up instead of hammering them down.
