When Saying Nothing Means Everything

When Saying Nothing Means Everything

My older sister, who lives in Taiwan, was enchanted by the sight of yellow-crested cockatoos soaring freely in the vibrant skies of Australia. In Taiwan, owning one of these beautiful birds is a rare luxury, with prices ranging from 2.5K to 5K AUD. For years, she had dreamed of having one, yet the hefty cost kept her desire grounded.

One evening, during a casual text exchange, she brought it up again. I said, “Go ahead and get one if it makes you happy.” She hesitated and replied, “But it’s a waste of money.” I simply responded, “Okay, then don’t get one.” And just like that, the conversation ended, or so I thought. Normally, I would have jumped in with reasons why she should follow her heart, but this time, I chose not to.

A few days later, my phone buzzed with a picture of her holding her new bird.

Reflecting on this, I was reminded of something I heard in a podcast featuring Mel Robbins. She spoke about the Let Them theory, a simple yet transformative idea: relinquish the urge to control or persuade others and instead trust them to find their own way. It is about stepping back and allowing people to make decisions for themselves, even if it is hard to resist offering advice.

My sister’s situation was not a perfect match for the theory, but it felt like an extension of it. By staying quiet, I gave her the space to process her thoughts. Without my interference, she discovered her own clarity and made a choice that brought her genuine joy. It hit me that people often already know what they want; they just need someone to truly listen and give them the freedom to decide.

Her happiness was a reminder that true support isn’t about solving someone else’s dilemmas. It’s about being there, listening, and trusting them to navigate their own path.

"When we stop trying to direct others, we empower them to find their own way."
